Four Elements Series

This four part series with Lucy Butler will challenge your body and open your mind to the different elements and how they can influence your physical and mental energy during your yoga practise. Each class also comes with a suggestion of an offering you can use to enhance your practise and will follow a distinct type of flow that relates to the chosen element.

Tell me more about this series ?

Earth: The earth element is where we come from. When you express a healthy connection to earth element you feel stable and rooted. Emotionally you are grounded and confident and make considered decisions. Earth also represents growth and needs the water element to grow finding the balance is key. You will bring more earth awareness into your practice through grounding and building a secure base. ‘Come back down to earth’ with a flow focused on balancing postures, your stability is facilitated through deepening your connection with the Earth and connecting to your root Chakra.

Air: Expressing lightness and movement, the air element represents the ability to move freely, lightly and effortlessly embodied in your breath, putting us in touch with the flow of Prana. The air element relates to your wisdom, discerning intelligence, and is associated with mental agility, logic, and objective. Air is partially powerful because it fans the fire in your mind so we need to be mindful to bring balance through grounding too. The air element invites you to not only breathe deeply but also refine your poses with mental acuity. Balance the air element with heart opening postures, pranayama and a focus on the heart and throat chakra.

Fire: Fire is a powerful cleanser, burning impurities. Asanas (postures) can be used to regulate the fire element. Dynamic asanas invoking movement, grace, and flow tend to increase fire in the body. This will burn out toxins from the other elements: earth, water and air. Expect a fiery flow focused on your lower body and the Solar Plexus Chakra (Core). A mix of movement and stillness allowing you to regulate fire as well as harmonise the earth and air elements.

Water: Water refers to the water that flows through your veins, or the circulatory system in your body. Health is only possible when water remains flowing in your body, cooling the fire element. The practice will take on a flowing action, with one movement fluidly moving into the next. Water has magical properties and is essential to life, with incredible healing and cleansing powers. The water element represents the Sacral Chakra, expect to open your body from the hips up as you flow with your entire body.
